Shortly after Matthews’ Southern Comfort unexpectedly took Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” to the top of the UK charts in 1970, Ian (now Iain) Matthews abruptly dissolved the band in favour of a solo career. The result was this excellent album released in 1971 for Vertigo featuring an all-star cast of players, including Fairport Convention’s Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson, as well as Pink Floyd entourage members Andy Roberts and Tim Renwick, and celebrated keyboardist Keith Tippett. This album of self-penned compositions was Matthews’ best yet and fully solidified his reputation as a first rate singer-songwriter. Highlights include the beautiful title track and duet with Sandy Denny, “If You Saw Thro’ My Eyes”, “Hearts” and the epic “Southern Wind”. Also features two covers by the late great Greenwich Village folk singer Richard Fariña (married to Joan Baez's sister, Mimi), “Reno Nevada” and his scathing criticism of Bob Dylan, “Morgan The Pirate”. Includes lyrics.
