Where is the common ground between Lionel Martin, a saxophonist with telluric tendencies and a style informed by years of frequenting the back roads of punk jazz, and Sangoma Everett, a drummer defined by his polyrhythmic elegance whose drumsticks are saturated with the great tradition he experienced alongside Clifford Jordan, Dizzy Gillespie, Memphis Slim and Eddy Louiss? Its easy to find, provided we dont rely solely on appearances. It starts with an openness towards the many worlds of music, which their respective paths communicate. This suggestive plural is expressed in the album, which plays on each musicians uniqueness. It is through this exchange that their homage makes perfect sense. After having formed an initial quartet based on his compositions (as well as those of Pharoah Sanders, for whom he has a particular penchant) which included Sangoma Everett, Lionel Martin decided to go further in his collaboration with this musician whom he had secretly admired for a long time. "We were alike in our energy, in our desire to go higher and higher. So I said to myself, why not play as a duo? Well have even more space. Yes, but what should we play?
