This release presents two superb quartet LPs by the great Jackie McLean: Swing, Swang, Swinging' (Blue Note BST84024, 1959), featuring Walter Bishop Jr. on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Art Taylor on drums, and Let Freedom Ring (Blue Note BST84106, 1962), with backing by Walter Davis Jr. on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. While the former album showcases McLean playing mostly standards (only one tune is an original by the saxophonist) in the traditional bebop style, the second LP consists of three original and one Bud Powell tune, and focuses on modal structures and on elements of the free jazz movement with was emerging at the time.
