One doesn't come across albums like 'Approaching' too often. In fact, the latest Finnish record in this discipline is Edward Vesala's timeless manifesto 'I'm here' from three decades ago. So one might even say that it was about time a percussionist from Finland made a solo album that's based on uninhibited self-expression. For this task there really is no better man than Janne Tuomi. A former apprentice of Vesala's, an avid admirer of Milford Graves and Elvin Jones and a student of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, he has a deep understanding of the power and possibilities of the oldest instrument in the world.
