Formed in 2013, Robert J Zimmer? is an instrumental ensemble from the University of Chicago. The band's self-titled debut album was recorded live at Logan Center for the Arts in June 2017. It was performed by the septet of guitar, keyboards, clarinet, trumpet, drums, percussions, and tuba (instead of traditional bass guitar). Drawing from every corner of the musical universe, the ensemble creates complex, melodically rich, evocative, eclectic, polyrhythmic, polymorphic, and illustratively expressive instrumental music at the intersection of progressive jazz-fusion, experimental rock, and contemporary cinematic with lots of shifts and tangles. Yet despite its challenging character, the album features very enjoyable and refreshing music which can be recommended for both connoisseurs and mass audience.
