Andrew Bees
Singer-Songwriter-Vocalist Andrew Bees is from St. Andrew, Waterhouse, Jamaica: an area with one of the richest histories in Roots Reggae "Ras Tafari" music. Since 1996, this phenomenal vocalist has been the lead singer for the Grammy winning group Black Uhuru. Andrew Bees is a true "SoulJah of Love" living "Real Life" in these unpredictable times as he continually and unconditionally fights for "Justice" and "Clean Energy."
Andrew Bees began singing when he was 14 back in 1986, and his inimitable voice made its way to the "Colgate Cavity Fighters Club" program on Radio Jamaica (R.J.R.), where he became a regular performer. Advancing his skills, Andrew began singing around all-star Reggae legends like Augustus Pablo, Half Pint, Hugh Mundell, Junior Reid, Locksley Castell, King Everald, and Wayne "Sleng Teng" Smith; a growing list of musicians would personally request the young Bees. By the time 1990 rolled around, Andrew had recorded singles for Castro Brown's "New Name Music" productions: "Life In The Ghetto," "Struggle and Strive" and "Be Cool" all garnered significant airplay and attention. In 1991, Andrew Bees and longtime Waterhouse neighbor Fitzroy Francis collaborated, leading to Andrew recording the single "Things A Gwan Things A Go Dun." This led to his first studio album – \“Militant\” for Music Lion Productions, which was produced by Fitzroy Francis and distributed by R.A.S. Records in the U.S. and Sony in Japan.
A live performance career started in 1993 with Bees appearing on Bunny Wailer's 100 Artist "Ghetto Bash Concert" at the Jam World Entertainment Center in Jamaica. In 1996, Andrew Bees toured Brazil as a guest vocalist for a highly influential Reggae group called "BLACK UHURU." By 1997, Andrew Bees had become the official lead vocalist of Reggae's first-ever Grammy Award winning group. They recorded a studio album called "Unification" in 1998 – it was produced by the legendary King Jammys, who also produced Black Uhuru's first studio album "Black Sounds of Freedom" in 1977. In 2000, Black Uhuru recorded a second studio album, "Dynasty," for the U.S. based R.A.S. Records label. They also recorded a 2002 "Dubbing It Live" album (recorded at the Paléo Music Festival), and toured with legendary production icons "Sly and Robbie." The collective performed extensively throughout Europe, Japan, North and South America.
In 2006, Andrew Bees recorded a second solo album produced by Guyana-based Walter Fraser. This project was called "I-ration" and it was released through Vizion Sound Records. As his musical mission kept moving, Andrew Bees continued touring with Black Uhuru. Andrew migrated to the US
in 2009, where he began focusing on his solo career as he continued on as a lead vocalist for Black Uhuru. In 2012, they launched a massive US tour which took them through various West Coast states. His next project was a solo EP, \“Official Andrew Bees\” for VP Records’ Vpal Music. Andrew recorded \“Vatican\” on the \“Cyan Stop the Youth\” rhythm from a new EP as his follow-up single to the #1 hit \“Better Must Come\” and later, \“Cool Operator\” – the 2013 remix featured singer Chyna Nicole.
This time period brought many events to the Beeshive: In January 2012 through a reunion with his longtime protege, Record Producer Fitzroy Francis recorded a new Andrew Bees project. "Something Strange," was released on the "Mighty In Battle" Riddim project for Mightyful13 Records, and climbed to #8 on the Foundation Radio Network/New York Top 30 Music chart. In September 2012, Andrew Bees recorded his first tribute to the late Great Delroy Wilson "Better Must Come." This gave rise to a huge upsurge in Andrew’s presence on an international level as a solo artist and the song spread like wildfire, receiving radio airplay and charting in New York and South Florida. "Better Must Come" went on to hit the #1 position on Clinton Lindsay's Foundation Radio Network/New York Top 30 Music Chart, #4 on the South Florida's Top 25 Reggae Chart, and tipped the scales at #1 on various worldwide charts.
Andrew Bees' second tribute to Delroy Wilson, "Cool Operator" went to #1 in England and was part of a collaborative album produced by Fitzroy Francis and his wife Empress Skortcher on the "Operator 2013 Rhythm Velocity" for Mightyful13 Records. Distributed digitally worldwide by Mightyful13/VP Records (Vpal Dist), this album included artists like Zanadu, Bassie Dee, Little Hero, Shanti High, King Mellowman, Tabeta Cshae and a Dub mix by the late Phillip Smart.
