Fredrik Ullén
Born 13 April 1968 in Västerås, is a Swedish pianist and professor of cognitive neuroscience at the Department of Neuroscience at the Karolinska Institute.
Ullén studied piano for Gunnar Hallhagen and Irène Mannheimer at the Royal College of Music with a degree in 1993, and for Liisa Pohjola at the Sibelius Academy, and in Germany. Ullén defended his thesis in 1996 at the Karolinska Institute, where he became an associate professor in 2006 and in 2010 he became professor of cognitive neuroscience. As a pianist and researcher, he is also affiliated with research projects at the Stockholm Brain Institute (SBI). Ullén has made a lot of recordings among which the first collected recordings of György Ligeti's all piano works have ever attracted great international attention. He is also the first to record Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabjis 100 Études transcendantes. For his recordings, he has received several international music / critic awards.
He has, among other things, played in duo with the oboist Helen Jahren. The duo premiered works by Kim Hedås and Mårten Josjö and others. In other duo constellations he appears together with percussionist Jonny Axelsson and cellist Judit Csatòszegi.
Fredrik Ullén was elected in 2007 as a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
