Kurt Sanderling
German conductor, born 19 September 1912 in Arys, German Empire (today Orzysz, Poland) and died 18 September 2011 in Berlin, Germany. Jewish, he left Germany in 1936, three years after the Nazis came to power, and moved to Stalinꞌs Russia. He relocated to East Germany in 1960. He was permitted to travel to the West, and from 1970, he started recording and giving concerts in the UK and USA. He was awarded the British C.B.E. in 2002. Father of musicians Thomas Sanderling, Michael Sanderling and Stefan Sanderling.
