Tashi Wada With Yoshi Wada And Friends
Tashi Wada With Yoshi Wada And Friends, later known as Tashi Wada Group, is a collaborative ensemble formed in 2017 by American experimental musician Tashi Wada with his father Yoshi Wada, a prominent Japanese electroacoustic composer, member of Fluxus movement, and one of the leading figures of the downtown New York underground scene.
Yoshi and Tashi Wada have been collaborating extensively since the mid-2000s, with Tashi assisting in multiple roles on several of Yoshi’s early classics reissues: translating liner notes, transferring audio from original tapes, supervising production arrangement. The father-and-son duo began playing together around 2010, during the 'Pipe Dreams' performance series at Emily Harvey Foundation in NYC. Wadas continued to rehearse and played together at the 2010 (k-raa-k)³ Festival in Belgium. In May 2010, they met at Castle Studio in San Francisco to record Tashi (reed organ, harmonium) and Yoshi Wada (bagpipe, audio generators) performing Yoshi’s newest piece Reed Modulations. This was the first occasion of two artists working together in the studio environment (even though they merely captured a single, unedited live take).
They continued to play together extensively, but only got in the studio again in September of 2017 when Tashi Wada invited his father, his partner Julia, and his friends Corey and Cole to record his new compositions (including three pieces co-written with Yoshi). They recorded the material at Lucy's Meat Market studio in Los Angeles, CA in a few days, with Cole MGN acting as the producer and engineer, and one year after the resulting CD/LP album was released by Rvng Intl. in Frkwys series.
The ensemble, appearing as 'Tashi Wada Group,' went on a tour across Europe in March-April of 2019, followed by the release of digital-only EP (one track from the original album, remastered by R.A. Irisarri, plus two remixes).
Tashi Wada Group went on the EU/UK Fall tour in Sept 2019 and played with a special guest Ezra Buchla at Berkeley Art Museum in Dec 2019.
