Sugar Music

Sugar Music
Italian record company and publisher.
Hungarian-born Ladislao Sugar started his first musical publishing business, Melodi, in Milan in 1932 and expanded into Suvini Zerboni company in 1935. After taking over full ownership in 1948, Sugar joined forces with rival company CGD (General Records Company) in 1952 and ran the new company throughout the 1960s when leading Italian acts Adriano Celentano and Johnny Dorelli headed the roster.
A partnership in Italy with CBS led to the creation of CBS Sugar in 1970, which was run by Sugar's daughter-in-law and former CGD artist, Caterina Caselli. In 1977 the Sugar CBS deal ended, followed by founder Ladislao Sugar's death in 1981, aged 85. In 1989 the family sold CGD to Warner Music International, but retained much of the company's important catalogue.
A new Sugar record label was formed with Caselli's son Filippo Sugar at the helm and the discovery in 1993 of Andrea Bocelli re-established Sugar as a major music company with interests in Italian retail stores and radio stations.
